Larry Hogan Declines to Support Trump Despite Endorsement

 September 29, 2024

In a recent interview on CBS' "Face the Nation," former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan made a surprising declaration that could shake up the political landscape in the upcoming elections.

As reported by Politico, Hogan revealed that he would not be voting for Donald Trump in the presidential race despite Trump's endorsement of Hogan's Senate bid.

Hogan's decision to distance himself from Trump is not new. He did not vote for Trump in the 2016 or 2020 elections, instead opting to write in alternative candidates. In 2016, he wrote in his father's name, former Maryland Representative Lawrence Hogan, and in 2020, he chose former President Ronald Reagan.

Hogan's Stance On Bipartisanship And Unity

The former governor emphasized his commitment to putting country over party, stating:

I'm not running just for the Republican Party. It's not just about red versus blue, which is what my opponent wants it to be about. I'm concerned about the red, white, and blue and willing to put country over party, and I'm hoping that the voters will be willing to do the same thing.

This statement underscores Hogan's attempt to appeal to a broader electorate beyond strict party lines. His campaign for the Senate seat is seen as a crucial race that could determine the balance of power in Congress.

Hogan's opponent in the Senate race is Democrat Angela Alsobrooks, the current county executive of Prince George's County. If successful, Hogan would become the first Republican to win a Maryland Senate seat since Charles McC. Mathias in 1980, marking a significant shift in the state's political landscape.

Criticism Of Trump's Rhetoric And Behavior

During the interview, Hogan didn't shy away from criticizing Trump's recent controversial statements.

When asked about Trump's comment calling Vice President Kamala Harris "mentally disabled," Hogan responded forcefully:

I think all of that is outrageous and unacceptable and I've already called him out when he had the one interview where he was questioning her racial identity and now he's questioning her mental competence and I think that's insulting not only to the vice president, but to people that actually do have mental disabilities.

Hogan further emphasized his long-standing opposition to Trump's divisive rhetoric, stating that he has been one of the leading voices against Trump and his supporters within the Republican Party for quite some time.

Complex Relationship With The Republican Party

The relationship between Hogan and Trump has been tumultuous. In 2022, Trump labeled Hogan a "RINO" (Republican in Name Only), criticizing his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, Trump's team lashed out at Hogan when he refused to defend Trump following a criminal conviction.

Despite the ongoing political conflicts, Hogan remains dedicated to working within the two-party system. He voiced concerns about both major parties straying from their original principles, noting that Democrats have moved further left while Republicans have increasingly adopted Trump's views.

Hogan emphasized the value of maintaining a healthy and competitive two-party system in the U.S. He views his candidacy as a chance to bridge divisions and build agreement. He highlighted that his career has focused on finding consensus and common ground for the benefit of all.

Conclusion

Larry Hogan's refusal to support Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election, despite receiving Trump's endorsement for his Senate bid, highlights the complex dynamics within the Republican Party. Hogan's emphasis on bipartisanship and his criticism of Trump's rhetoric demonstrates his attempt to carve out a unique political identity. As the Senate race in Maryland heats up, Hogan's stance could have significant implications for his campaign and the broader political landscape.
