Trump Threatens to Prosecute Google for Election Interference

 September 28, 2024

Former President Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm with his latest promise to pursue legal action against tech giant Google over alleged election interference.

Breitbart News reported that Trump, in a recent post on Truth Social, vowed to prosecute Google "at maximum levels" if he returns to office. The former president accused the company of manipulating search results to his detriment while favoring his political opponents.

Trump's allegations center on what he perceives as a systematic bias in Google's search algorithm. He claims the tech company deliberately showcases negative stories about him while promoting positive content about Vice President Kamala Harris, calling this practice "illegal activity" and a form of election interference.

Trump's Accusations Against Tech Giant

In his Truth Social post, Trump outlined his grievances against Google. He stated:

This is an ILLEGAL ACTIVITY, and hopefully the Justice Department will criminally prosecute them for this blatant Interference of Elections. If not, and subject to the Laws of our Country, I will request their prosecution, at the maximum levels, when I win the Election, and become President of the United States!

The former president's strong words reflect his longstanding tensions with major tech companies, which he has often accused of bias against conservative viewpoints.

Trump's allegations are not without context. Recent studies have suggested disparities in how search engines present information about political candidates. These findings have fueled ongoing debates about the role of technology in shaping public opinion and influencing electoral outcomes.

Studies Suggest Search Result Disparities

A study by the Media Research Center (MRC) has become a focal point in this controversy. The research, conducted in September 2024, examined Google search results for both Trump and Harris in the context of the 2024 presidential race.

According to the MRC's findings, searches for "donald trump presidential race 2024" yielded results that placed Trump's campaign website sixth, behind numerous articles from what the study characterized as left-leaning news sources. In contrast, the study reported more favorable positioning for content related to Vice President Harris.

This research builds on earlier findings from June, where the MRC claimed that Google was giving preferential treatment to Joe Biden's campaign website in search results while Trump's site was notably absent from the first page.

Accusations Of Censorship And Bias

The controversy extends beyond search result rankings. Trump and his supporters have also raised concerns about alleged censorship of certain search terms. One specific incident involved searches related to an assassination attempt at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.

Users reported that when typing "assassination attempt on" into Google's search bar, the auto-complete function did not suggest the recent incident involving Trump. Google responded to these allegations, stating that their systems have "protections against Auto-complete predictions associated with political violence," which were functioning as intended.

The company emphasized that no manual action was taken on the auto-complete predictions and that they are continually working on improvements to the feature. However, this explanation has not satisfied critics who see it as part of a broader pattern of bias.

Conclusion

Former President Donald Trump has vowed to prosecute Google for alleged election interference through biased search results if he returns to office. This promise stems from studies suggesting disparities in how Google presents information about political candidates, particularly favoring left-leaning sources and Trump's opponents. The controversy highlights the growing tension between political figures and tech companies, raising questions about the role of digital platforms in shaping public opinion and influencing electoral outcomes.
