According to Fox News, retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Scott Duffey shared his analysis of Routh's behavior, suggesting that the suspect's actions indicate a pattern of provoking law enforcement responses.

It's not only a lengthy criminal arrest record, but for several decades. You have this escalation of violent acts, and then, of course, other contacts with police like driving without a license. Those are not violent acts, but they are constant contacts with police. That tells me that over the past few decades, whatever was going through his head, he wanted to be in contact with law enforcement.

Retired Greensboro Police Department Officer Eric Rasecke shared his experiences with Routh, describing him as someone who believed he was above the law and often boasted about his ability to evade consequences.
A particularly notable incident occurred in 2002 when Routh barricaded himself inside his roofing business with a semi-automatic rifle following a traffic stop. The standoff lasted approximately three hours before Routh surrendered without further incident.
