Swing State Officials' Emails Expose Election Disruption Plans

 September 19, 2024

A recent investigation has uncovered a coordinated effort by election officials and conservative groups in Georgia to potentially disrupt the certification of the 2024 presidential election results.

According to Alternet, emails obtained through a public records request reveal a network of MAGA-aligned organizations and sympathetic county election officials preparing to challenge the outcome if Vice President Kamala Harris defeats former President Donald Trump in the crucial swing state.

The Guardian, which first reported on these emails, describes how various far-right groups, including Tea Party Patriots and the Election Integrity Network, are collaborating with election officials in several Georgia counties. This alliance, dubbed the "Georgia Election Integrity Coalition," appears to be laying the groundwork for contesting election results should they not favor their preferred candidate.

Email Trail Exposes Coordination Efforts

The emails, which were acquired by the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), shed light on the inner workings of this coalition. One key figure identified in the correspondence is David Hancock, a member of the Gwinnett County Board of Registrations and Elections, who has been described as an "outspoken election denier."

Hancock's involvement includes authoring and sharing an article titled "Georgia Democratic Party Threatens Elections Officials" on behalf of the United Tea Party of Georgia (UTPG). This piece criticized efforts by the Democratic Party to ensure that election officials fulfill their duty to certify election results, regardless of personal doubts or concerns.

The email recipients included several Republican election officials who had previously attempted to decertify election results in Georgia following the 2020 presidential election. Hancock encouraged these officials to disseminate the article, emphasizing the importance of spreading their message.

Strategies And Key Players Revealed

Further examination of the emails reveals the involvement of other significant figures in this effort. Julie Adams, using her TeaPartyPatriots.org email address, sought to coordinate messaging about alleged voter fraud with the group. The coalition has also hosted meetings featuring prominent election deniers, including Cobb County Republican Party co-chair Salleigh Grubbs.

Grubbs successfully lobbied for a rule change at the Georgia State Board of Elections, making it easier for counties to refuse to certify election results.

Another notable speaker at these gatherings was Dr. Janice Johnston, a state election board member whom Trump praised as a "pit bull" fighting for victory during a recent rally.

Legal And Historical Context

The core argument put forth by election deniers centers on claims of widespread voter fraud, which they argue necessitates delaying result certification to conduct investigations. However, it's important to note that extensive research has found no evidence of significant voter fraud in U.S. elections.

Democrats have pointed to historical precedents, citing court cases from 19th century Georgia that establish county election boards' certification duties as "ministerial" rather than discretionary.

Even Georgia's Republican Secretary of State, Brad Raffensberger, has reportedly instructed his office to remind county officials that refusing to certify results could lead to legal consequences.

Conclusion

The emails obtained by CREW and reported by The Guardian expose a coordinated effort by conservative groups and some election officials in Georgia to potentially challenge the 2024 election results. This "Georgia Election Integrity Coalition" includes far-right organizations and sympathetic county election officials who appear to be preparing strategies to contest the outcome if it doesn't favor their preferred candidate. The revelation has raised concerns about the integrity of the upcoming election process and the potential for disruption in this crucial swing state.
