Elderly Woman Escapes Serious Injury After Alligator Attack In Florida

 September 10, 2024

In North Fort Myers, Florida, a harrowing encounter between an elderly woman and a large alligator unfolded surprisingly quickly.

An 84-year-old resident, Del Boppel, was attacked by the reptile while out walking her dog near a local pond, People reported.

On Thursday, September 5, around 8:30 p.m., Boppel was walking near Julia Mobile Home Park when an alligator seemingly surged at her and her dog at an alarming speed.

Unexpected Attack Left Little Time for Reaction

Boppel described the suddenness of the attack, equating the alligator's speed to that of a torpedo. It was not just the quickness of the attack but also the surprise factor that left her stunned.

In a desperate effort to save her dog, she managed to toss her pet, a shih tzu named Queen, out of immediate danger while confronting the looming threat herself.

During the attack, Boppel defended herself bravely, punching the alligator directly in an attempt to fend it off. This encounter led to the alligator biting her on her leg and hand. Thankfully, the alligator eventually backed down, but not before causing significant alarm and injury.

Neighbors' Quick Assistance Prevented Worse Outcomes

Alerted by her screams, neighbors rushed to Boppel’s aid and immediately called emergency services. A timely response from local authorities and medical teams ensured Boppel received the necessary care promptly. She was hospitalized soon after the incident, where treatment was administered for her injuries. According to her daughter, despite the traumatic event, Boppel is doing "okay."

Del Boppel recounted the terrifyingly swift encounter with the reptile.

It was like a torpedo... I didn't see anything go that fast in my life. I didn't have time to think. All of a sudden, I had a premonition, I'm telling you. It was like, 'Uh-oh.'

After the attack, someone notified wildlife officials about the aggressive animal. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) captured and removed a 7-foot, 3-inch alligator from the vicinity and confirmed its involvement in the incident.

Local Residents Had Reported Previous Sighting

Locals were well aware of the presence of alligators in the area. A neighbor highlighted ongoing concerns about the wildlife, noting that people had frequently seen the gator responsible in the vicinity, along with a smaller companion.

Such encounters raise questions about the proximity of local wildlife to residential areas and the inherent risks involved. The FWC's intervention not only alleviated immediate danger but also brought relief to the community deeply shaken by the event.

Del Boppel's resilience and quick action during such a critical moment underline a broader narrative of unexpected wildlife encounters and the human response to them. Her daughter and neighbors are thankful for the swift response from medical and wildlife authorities that ensured her safety and medical attention following the ordeal.

As the community reflects on this incident, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of its residents and pets against potential wildlife encounters.
