Trump Advocates Amendment Alterations to Impeach Vice Presidents

 September 8, 2024

Former President Donald Trump has suggested modifying the 25th Amendment to allow for the impeachment of vice presidents who allegedly conceal a president's incapacity.

According to Politico, Trump made this proposal during a recent rally in Wisconsin, continuing his claims about Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party hiding President Biden's health status.

Trump's proposal comes less than two months after President Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race amid concerns about his age and mental acuity. The former president's comments reflect his ongoing narrative questioning Biden's fitness for office, particularly following what he described as a "disastrous" debate performance in June that ultimately led to Biden's exit from the race.

Trump's Proposed Constitutional Amendment And Political Implications

During his rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin, Trump expressed his support for modifying the 25th Amendment. He stated:

I will support modifying the 25th Amendment to make clear that if a vice president lies or engages in a conspiracy to cover up the incapacity of the president of the United States — if you do that with a cover-up of the president of the United States, it's grounds for impeachment immediately and removal from office, because that's what they did.

This proposal marks Trump's latest attempt to address what he perceives as issues within the current administration. However, it's important to note that amending the Constitution is a complex and challenging process, making the likelihood of such a change extremely low.

Trump's focus on this issue also highlights his ongoing struggle to adjust to running against a new opponent in the 2024 presidential race. The former president has frequently expressed frustration with the change at the top of the Democratic ticket and has occasionally appeared confused about who his current opponent is.

Key Battleground States And Campaign Strategies

Trump's appearance in Wisconsin, a crucial swing state he lost to Biden in 2020, is part of his campaign's efforts to focus on seven core battleground states. Current polling averages indicate that Trump is narrowly trailing Harris in Wisconsin, underscoring the state's importance in the upcoming election.

Meanwhile, Vice President Harris has been preparing for her upcoming debate against Trump, scheduled for Tuesday. During a visit to a spice store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Harris expressed her gratitude for recent endorsements from Republican former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter, former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney.

Harris stated:

They both, as leaders who are well respected, are making an important statement — that it's OK and important to put country above party, and I'm honored to have their support.

Trump, however, did not address these endorsements during his rally; instead, he focused on his plans to "drain the swamp" and improve government efficiency.

Trump's Campaign Promises And Ongoing Legal Challenges

During his Wisconsin rally, Trump outlined several campaign promises, including the creation of a "government efficiency" commission and a pledge to cut 10 federal regulations for every new one implemented. He also reiterated his call to dismantle the Department of Education.

The former president also touched on his ongoing legal challenges, misleadingly claiming that sentencing in his hush-money case was delayed until after the election because "there's no case." It's important to note that Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts in this case.

Trump's proposed amendment to the 25th Constitution stands out as a significant development in the 2024 presidential race. The former president's focus on questioning the current administration's integrity continues to shape his campaign narrative. Both candidates ' legal challenges and ongoing campaign promises will likely play crucial roles in shaping voter perceptions. The upcoming debate between Trump and Harris could prove to be a pivotal moment in determining the direction of the election.
