RFK Jr. Seeks Cabinet Position In Harris Administration For Campaign Withdrawal

 August 16, 2024

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has reportedly attempted to secure a meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss dropping out of the race in exchange for a Cabinet position.

According to Fox News, Kennedy's outreach was made through intermediaries, but Harris and her campaign have not responded to the proposal.

Kennedy's bid for the presidency faced a setback earlier this week when a judge ruled that his name should not appear on New York's ballot. The longshot candidate's attempt to meet with Harris comes after he made similar overtures to former President Donald Trump during a convention in Milwaukee last month, which also did not result in an agreement.

Kennedy's Potential Leverage In Presidential Race

Kennedy's polling numbers have shown him to be one of the most disruptive independent candidates in decades. This position could potentially be used as leverage to negotiate a role in a future administration, should he decide to drop out and endorse either Harris or Trump.

Despite his attempts to meet with other candidates, Kennedy continues to campaign and make regular media appearances, maintaining that he can win the election. However, he has left open the possibility of stepping aside if either Harris or Trump shares his vision for the country.

Kennedy expressed his perspective on the situation, stating:

From the beginning of this campaign, we were saying people should be talking to each other. That is the only way of unifying the country.

Harris Campaign's Response To Kennedy's Proposal

The Harris campaign has not shown interest in entertaining Kennedy's proposal. Kennedy views this lack of response as a strategic error on the part of the Democratic campaign.

Following reports of his attempts to meet with Harris, Kennedy took to social media to clarify his position. In a post on X, he stated that he has no intention of endorsing Harris for president.

Kennedy wrote:

VP Harris's Democratic Party would be unrecognizable to my father and uncle and I cannot reconcile it with my values. I have no plans to endorse Kamala Harris for President. I do have a plan to defeat her.

Speculation Surrounding Kennedy And Trump Campaign

While Kennedy's attempts to meet with Harris have been unsuccessful, speculation continues about a potential agreement between Kennedy and the Trump campaign. According to anonymous Trump campaign advisers, there is an expectation that Kennedy may drop out and support the former president.

Kennedy was reportedly spotted at a hotel near Trump's Florida home and campaign headquarters. However, the Trump campaign has not responded to requests for comment on this matter.

Kennedy also noted that he has had no contact with the Democratic Party since launching his independent campaign. He stated, "The only contact I have with the DNC is them suing me through intermediaries," referring to the legal battle initiated by the Democratic National Committee to impede his and other third-party campaigns.

In conclusion, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s attempts to negotiate a Cabinet position with Vice President Kamala Harris in exchange for dropping out of the presidential race have been unsuccessful. Kennedy has since clarified that he does not intend to endorse Harris. Speculation continues about potential agreements between Kennedy and the Trump campaign. The independent candidate maintains that he is still running to win the election despite these reported overtures to other campaigns.
