Retired Police Official Accuses Governor Of Allowing City Unrest

 August 15, 2024

A strong reproach has been leveled against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz by retired Lt. John Nagel of the Minnesota State Police.

According to Fox News, Lt. Nagel has vehemently criticized Gov. Walz’s approach during the 2020 Minneapolis riots, accusing him of political maneuvering at the cost of public safety.

John Nagel’s critique comes as he campaigns for a legislative seat in Minnesota's House District 46A, where he openly discusses his concerns with Walz's leadership.

The retired lieutenant portrays the governor as an anti-police figure whose actions, or lack thereof, during the riots allegedly allowed significant damage to Minneapolis.

Nagel Claims Walz's Actions Were Politically Motivated

According to Nagel, Gov. Walz’s hesitation to deploy the National Guard promptly was a calculated move that he believes further endangered the city. This accusation stems from the governor's delayed response to the escalating violence during the riots incited by George Floyd’s death.

“He let Minneapolis burn for three straight nights without doing anything. And he called the riots, he stated their actions were, this is a quote, ‘righteous anger,’” reported GOP Rep. Pete Stauber, reflecting on Gov. Walz's comment during the unrest.

Widow Criticizes Governor's Support for Law Enforcement

The widow of Pope County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Owen, killed in the line of duty, personally rebuked the embattled governor by barring him from her husband’s funeral, signaling her deep discontent with his perceived lack of support for law enforcement.

During an interview, John Nagel elaborated on the governor's perceived disregard for law enforcement, stating, “He’s anti-police, defund the police, when you have police families, and we have an officer killed in the line of duty when that family looks at the governor and says we don’t want you at the funeral. That should tell you a great deal of how law enforcement in general feels about Walz.”

John Nagel emphasized the implications of Gov. Walz’s policies on public safety and political culture in Minnesota. He argued that the state’s well-being has deteriorated under the governor's watch, an opinion supported by other Republicans who accuse the governor of mishandling the crisis.

Nagel Stresses on Walz’s Alleged Alignment with Extremes

Reflecting broader Republican critiques, Nagel accuses Gov. Walz of aligning too closely with the Democratic party's more extreme positions. He fears such alignment may influence governance beyond the state level, posing concerns nationally if Walz were to assume federal responsibilities, especially given current global tensions.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s presence alongside Gov. Walz at campaign events perhaps highlights this concern, emphasizing the national party's support for Walz amid widespread criticism within the state.

John Nagel draws from his 30 years of service in law enforcement to fortify his criticisms, suggesting current policies do little to reconcile public safety and administrative accountability. These issues are pivotal as Nagel steps into the political arena, leveraging his law enforcement background against what he sees as a crisis of leadership.

John Nagel’s campaign and criticisms remain deeply woven into Minnesota's ongoing political narrative, presenting a polarized view of Governor Tim Walz's tenure and leadership style. The criticism touches on fundamental issues of public trust and law enforcement support, themes likely to be central in forthcoming political debates within the state.
