US Teen Loses Leg After Shark Attack During Belize Dive

 August 9, 2024

Tragedy struck on a family vacation in Belize when 15-year-old Annabelle Carlson was attacked by a shark, resulting in the loss of her leg.

The attack occurred during a diving trip near Lighthouse Reef, leaving the teenager critically injured and facing a protracted recovery, the New York Post reported.

Annabelle Carlson, from Aspen, Colorado, was on a diving excursion around Half Moon Caye when the incident happened. Following her dive, she entered the water for a swim and was subsequently attacked by a shark. The swift response from the tour operators Belize Dive Pro was critical. They rescued her and facilitated her transport to the Belize Coast Guard station.

At the station, Admiral Elton Bennett worked to stabilize Annabelle's condition before she was rushed to a hospital in Belize City for immediate care. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was quickly airlifted to a specialized trauma center in the United States. Unfortunately, the medical teams had to amputate her right leg due to critical damage.

Community Support and Fundraising Efforts

The traumatic event has rallied support both locally and internationally. A GoFundMe page launched to help cover her medical expenses and support her recovery has gathered more than $98,800 so far, aiming for a target of $250,000. Annabelle is a rising sophomore at Aspen High School, and the community has shown strong support during this challenging time.

From the GoFundMe page for Annabelle, "Annabelle was able to fight off the attack as best as she could but was critically injured in the fight."

This incident is rare in Belize, generating both concern and reassurance from authorities about the safety of marine activities. Belize’s Minister of the Blue Economy commented on the rarity of such attacks and emphasized the safety of swimming in the region.

Reflections on the Rarity of Shark Attacks

Admiral Elton Bennett noted the specifics of the injuries, stating, "It was her right leg that received a bite from the shark. So, she lost her right leg." The incident is not just a stark reminder of nature's unpredictability but also of the resilience of those affected. The GoFundMe campaign updates reflect a positive outlook with a spirited note: "Annabelle 1, shark 0."

This shark attack follows a similar tragedy involving another U.S. teenager earlier this year in Florida, bringing the dangers of shark attacks into sharp relief. Lulu Gribbin's mother recounted the terrifying ordeal and her daughter’s courageous survival, underscoring these unpredictable encounters.

Her mother shared the traumatic experience, saying, "I saw her wounds on her leg and started to scream. Once she was settled, her first words to us were, 'I made it.' And boy, she did."

The incidences underline the necessity for enhanced awareness and safety measures in water-related activities, particularly in regions known for diverse marine life.

Looking Ahead: Recovery and Support

Annabelle Carlson’s journey toward recovery is just beginning. She continues to receive treatment and support, buoyed by the significant fundraising efforts and community support. Her story, though tragic, is filled with notes of brave survival and community rallying to support one of their own during this critical time.

In conclusion, Annabelle's ordeal has captured the attention of many, serving as a painful reminder of the risks associated with ocean activities but also as a testament to human resilience and communal support in the face of such challenges.
