Asif Merchant, a 46-year-old Pakistani man with connections to Iran, was apprehended on charges of planning to assassinate a prominent political figure in the United States.
According to Fox News, Merchant was allowed entry into the U.S. through immigration parole as part of an FBI surveillance strategy.
Merchant arrived in the United States at Houston in April, where U.S. Customs and Border Protection immediately encountered him. The FBI had previously sponsored his entry under the premise of 'significant public benefit. ' Their goal was to closely monitor his actions within the country to strengthen their case against him.
Following his entry, Merchant traveled to New York City. Here, he met an individual he believed was a hitman, ready to collaborate on his sinister plans for August or September. Unbeknownst to Merchant, the supposed accomplice was an informant working for the FBI.
Merchant was identified as having family ties in both Iran and Pakistan. While he sought to conduct a grave act on U.S. soil, the Iranian government has not acknowledged any involvement.
"We have not received any reports on this matter from the U.S. Government," stated representatives from the Iranian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
The Mission also expressed that such activities would contradict Iran’s policies: "It is evident that the modus operandi in question contradicts the Iranian Government’s policy of legally prosecuting the murderer of General Soleimani." This underlines a declared stance against illegal actions, contrasting sharply with the accusations at hand.
Merchant was detained on July 12 as he attempted to leave the country, indicating that the FBI's strategy to allow his entry had reached its conclusion.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland recently spoke about the ongoing challenges in cases similar to that of Merchant, noting that the use of immigration parole in this manner is not unusual. He also discussed the wider implications of these issues for foreign nationals.
