Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro Postpones Hamptons Fundraisers Amid VP Speculation

 August 2, 2024

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has unexpectedly canceled his upcoming fundraising plans.

According to Fox News, Governor Josh Shapiro called off several campaign events in the Hamptons just days before Vice President Kamala Harris announced her choice for a running mate.

Shapiro, who was slated as a "special guest" at an event for The Next 50, a youth advocacy group, withdrew from the weekend events without a declared reason.

His office confirmed the change but provided no further details. Manuel Bonder, spokesperson for Shapiro, stated, "The governor’s trip was planned ... and included several fundraisers for his campaign committee." Nonetheless, Shapiro's sudden schedule adjustment has fueled rumors about his potential role in the upcoming election.

Vice President Kamala Harris plans to reveal her running mate choice next Tuesday at a rally in Philadelphia, a city pivotal in American politics and close to Shapiro's political base.

Controversy Surrounds Governor Shapiro

The potential VP candidate faces scrutiny due to his administration's handling of a sensitive internal issue. Governor Josh Shapiro’s office has been criticized by groups such as the National Women’s Defense League (NWDL) for its approach to a sexual harassment accusation.

The accusation targeted Mike Vereb, a former cabinet secretary, who resigned in September 2023 following a settlement of $295,000 with a complainant.

The National Women’s Defense League Director, Emma Davidson Tribbs, voiced her concerns about Shapiro’s responsibilities. She expressed:

Governor Shapiro’s office should have done a better job preventing sexual harassment happening in his own office... As the Harris Campaign and the Democratic Party consider their options for Vice Presidential candidates, we urge them to consider the handling of past complaints of sexual harassment inside the Pennsylvania Governor’s office.

Shapiro’s Office Responds to Controversies

The response from Shapiro's office highlights the procedures in place to address such allegations. Manuel Bonder elaborated on the matter:

Although the Commonwealth does not comment on specific personnel matters, it takes allegations of discrimination and harassment seriously. Robust procedures are in place for thoroughly investigating reports of discrimination and harassment – and these procedures are implemented whenever complaints of discrimination or harassment are made and provide detailed guidance to help ensure that allegations are promptly and fully investigated and that employees feel comfortable to report misconduct.

The Pennsylvania Governor has not stayed out of the public eye, continuing to appear at significant political events. His most notable appearances were alongside figures like President Joe Biden, including visits to Harrisburg and Philadelphia, underscoring his active involvement in key political activities.

Last month, Shapiro and Vice President Harris appeared together at the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, adding further speculation about his prospects as her running mate.

Despite facing critical challenges regarding his leadership, Governor Shapiro maintains a vigorous public engagement schedule. His robust participation in national politics and Harris's upcoming announcement place him in the spotlight of political discourse.

In summary, while Governor Josh Shapiro withdraws from immediate campaign activities to perhaps prepare for a larger political role, his handling of internal administration controversies remains under the microscope, presenting a complex backdrop to a potentially imminent VP nomination announcement by Vice President Kamala Harris.
