Biden DHS Accused of Suppressing Jan. 6 Report

 August 2, 2024

The Department of Homeland Security is under scrutiny after allegations surfaced about attempts to suppress a critical report on the Secret Service’s actions during the events of January 6, 2021.

According to the Daily Caller, Inspector General Joseph Cuffari has accused the Biden administration’s DHS of trying to prevent the release of the report, leading to a flurry of denials from top DHS officials.

Jonathan Meyer, DHS' head lawyer, firmly denied the accusations, stating that the DHS does not intend to withhold the report from Congress. According to Meyer, any redactions made to the report would only involve “security sensitive” information related to Secret Service operations. The Secret Service, which falls under the jurisdiction of the DHS, has come under fire for its handling of the events leading up to and during January 6.

Allegations of Interference Spark Debate

An anonymous DHS official noted that the inspector general holds the exclusive authority to release reports to Congress, adding another layer of complexity to the allegations. Cuffari, who former President Trump appointed, has launched two investigations into the Secret Service’s security role regarding Trump’s attempted assassination.

Some Republicans allege that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has delayed these assessments, particularly the report titled “USSS Preparation for and Response to the Events of January 6, 2021.”

Congressional sources informed Real Clear Investigations that the report has been sitting on the DHS secretary’s desk since at least April. This delay has raised suspicions and concerns among lawmakers and the public alike. The situation is further complicated by reports that law enforcement spotted a gunman almost 30 minutes before he began shooting on an unspecified occasion, drawing parallels to the security failures on January 6.

Security Failures and Missing Texts

On January 6, reports indicated that individuals with weapons were present outside the White House. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris's proximity to a pipe bomb at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in Washington, D.C., added to the day's chaos. Harris had to be evacuated once the bomb was discovered, despite a prior sweep of the area by a bomb-sniffing dog and the Secret Service.

A similar threat was present at the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) headquarters, where another pipe bomb was planted. In a July 2022 letter to congressional leaders, Cuffari revealed that many Secret Service text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021, were erased as part of a device-replacement program. The Office of Inspector General had requested these records before they were erased to help evaluate the events at the Capitol.

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service's chief of communications, claimed that the Secret Service was fully cooperating with the inspector general and denying any refusal of additional resources for Trump's security team. However, The Washington Post reported that sources familiar with the requests said they were denied, contradicting Guglielmi’s statements.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Reports

The Secret Service is already facing criticism for its apparent security failures at the Trump rally on January 6. A critical report related to these events is expected to be released soon, potentially dealing another blow to the agency. The DHS and the Secret Service have not responded to requests for comment on the allegations and the upcoming report.

Cuffari's accusations have intensified scrutiny of the DHS and the Secret Service, with lawmakers and the public eagerly awaiting the report's release. The erasure of vital text messages has only added to the controversy, raising questions about transparency and accountability within these agencies.

Guglielmi’s denial of any wrongdoing and his assertion of full cooperation with the inspector general have done little to quell the growing concerns. The upcoming report and its findings will be critical in shaping public and political opinion on the handling of security during one of the most tumultuous days in recent U.S. history.

Conclusion

Inspector General Joseph Cuffari’s accusations against the Biden administration’s DHS have stirred significant controversy. The DHS has denied any wrongdoing, stating that only sensitive information would be redacted from the report on the Secret Service’s response to January 6. The ongoing investigations and the anticipated release of the report will likely bring more clarity to the situation. The erasure of Secret Service text messages and the alleged delays by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas remain contentious issues. The public and lawmakers await further developments as the story unfolds.
