CNN Commentator Criticizes Kamala Harris for Distancing From Border Czar Role As Presidential Race Heats Up

 July 31, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris faces significant criticism for allegedly distancing herself from her prior role as "border czar."

Vice President Kamala Harris is scrutinized for her perceived evasion of past stances on immigration and healthcare, amplifying debates among her critics as the 2024 presidential race takes form, Fox News reported.

Harris, once designated the border czar, has revamped her views, according to CNN political commentator Scott Jennings. Jennings highlights Harris' shift on crucial topics such as fracking, border control, and gun policies, suggesting a strategic alignment with more moderate positions amid her presidential campaign.

During a recent appearance on CNN's "NewsNight with Abby Phillip," Jennings articulated his concerns about Harris' political maneuvering. He argued that Harris is intentionally trying to "erase all evidence" of her role in managing border issues.

Scott Jennings expressed his skepticism in the political commentator's pointed critique:

Trying to erase all evidence that she [Harris] was a 'border czar'...no way Democrats could believe they will fight to even a draw on the issue of immigration against former President Trump...I hope they run all their ads on immigration because it will remind the American people every time they turn on their television sets what a complete and utter failure this has all been.

Former Trump White House communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin, however, offered a different viewpoint during the same broadcast. She supported Harris' statement that Democrats had actively sought to increase border security and combat the fentanyl crisis, although Republicans obstructed their efforts.

Factual Clash Over Immigration and Healthcare Policies

Griffin backed Harris' claims, stating that it was "actually true" when Harris mentioned Democrats' support for more Customs and Border Patrol officers and their initiative against the fentanyl epidemic. She also referenced the Republican veto of what she described as the "most conservative border bill in decades."

Vice President Harris' campaign activities also reinforce her newly adopted moderate stance. Recently announced at a campaign event in Fayetteville, North Carolina, her team indicated that Harris would not pursue a fracking ban if elected president, reversing her earlier position.

The divergence from Harris' previous healthcare promises has prompted reactions from various sectors within her party. Nina Turner, a notable Democratic supporter, expressed her disappointment in Harris' shift away from more progressive healthcare reforms.

Nina Turner shared her letdown over the shifting policies:
"Somewhat disappointed...[Harris] has an opportunity in the first chair...to hear that she may walk away from supporting Medicare for all—that does not float my boat."

Repositioning Amidst the 2024 Presidential Election

The political scene remains tumultuous as Harris steers her campaign towards the center, perhaps aiming to capture a broader electoral base in the face of a highly competitive presidential race. Her recent statements and policy adjustments aim to distance her from potentially polarizing issues that could alienate moderate voters.

Moreover, amidst these strategic adjustments, Harris has maintained that President Biden is fit to continue his duties, countering arguments about his capability that had surfaced over the preceding months.

As the 2024 presidential race unfolds, Vice President Kamala Harris' changing stances on key issues such as immigration, healthcare, fracking, and gun control are drawing attention and scrutiny. Her strategic pivot is meeting with mixed reactions, highlighting the complex dynamics and challenges of aligning with an electorate's evolving expectations.
