Secret Service Declined Local Drone Help Prior to Trump Rally Attack

 July 25, 2024

Former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a campaign rally.

On July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania, surveillance offers involving drone technology were repeatedly declined by the U.S. Secret Service before an attack on the gathering, Fox News reported.

This catastrophic event unfolded at the Butler Farm Show, where Trump spoke. The assailant, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, employed a drone to inspect the area before opening fire from a rooftop. His attack left former President Trump wounded and resulted in the death of 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, a father of two, while seriously injuring two others.

Extensive Preparations Ignored by Secret Service

Despite the tragic incident, initial concerns about surveillance capabilities were not addressed adequately. A day before the rally, local law enforcement contacted the Secret Service, suggesting drone technology. However, these suggestions were not taken up until after the assault had already happened.

Thomas Matthew Crooks had not only used a firearm but also had multiple explosive devices in his vehicle, pointing to what could have potentially been a much larger attack. The repercussions of this incident were immediate, with U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle stepping down from her position following the fallout.

The aftermath saw a pivot in the Secret Service's approach to crowd security. A whistleblower's statement highlighted by Senator Josh Hawley reveals that the Service requested drone surveillance from local partners after the incident, a stark contrast to their prior refusals.

Senator Josh Hawley raised significant concerns in the investigation following this attack. He stated, "The whistleblower's claims illustrate a concerning discrepancy in the application of available security measures. This tragic event might have been mitigated had the technological offers been accepted."

After the tragedy, officials initiated multiple inquiries and congressional hearings to dissect what went wrong. Not only was the attack itself a point of analysis, but the preceding security measures also came under scrutiny.

FBI and Senate Intervene in Aftermath

FBI Director Christopher Wray confirmed the identity and actions of Crooks, underscoring the need for comprehensive security at such high-profile events.

The lack of proper coverage on the rooftop where Crooks launched his assaults was partly due to an assigned officer leaving because of high temperatures, an unnamed source noted.

Security consultants have weighed in on the incident. From Safehaven for Security Group, Bill Gage said, "The refusal to incorporate local drone support into the security setup exposed significant vulnerabilities." He added that this tragic incident should prompt an urgent reassessment of protective measures by the Secret Service.

This catastrophe and its handling have prompted broader concerns about the effectiveness of protective protocols during significant political events.

As investigations continue, the questions focus on the immediate response and the preparatory decisions that possibly compromised the safety of a former president and the public at this event.
