CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC Described VP Kamala Harris as 'Border Czar' Despite Current Disclaimers

 July 25, 2024

The discourse around Vice President Kamala Harris' role in managing U.S. border issues in recent days has been marked by contentious media portrayals and political disputes.

Harris was long dubbed the "border czar" in media circles, ever since President Joe Biden tasked her with addressing migration problems involving Mexico and the Northern Triangle, despite current attempts by some to erase that fact, as Breitbart reports.

In March 2021, Biden formally assigned Vice Harris the responsibility of engaging with these regions to tackle the complex challenges at the southern U.S. border, but subsequent failures have prompted Democrats to deny the significance of her role.

Media and Fact-Checking Agencies on Harris’ Title

While many outlets and political figures have used the term "border czar" to describe Harris, prominent fact-checking organizations have since questioned this nomenclature. PolitiFact has gone as far as categorizing this label as “mostly false,” suggesting a discrepancy between common rhetoric and official designations.

Further complicating the issue, a report from Axios shed light on what it claimed were the the nuances of Harris' role. While she was indeed pivotal in discussions with Mexico and Guatemala concerning border crossings, the label of "border czar" was clarified by the liberal outlet as inaccurate.

Multiple leading news channels including CNN, MSNBC, CBS News, and ABC News have not shied away from using the "border czar" title in the past, despite current distancing attempts. This was highlighted in a compilation released by MRC NewsBusters, which showed various media personalities affirming the title during their broadcasts.

Analysis of Harris's Political Spectrum Position

Breitbart News brought attention to another twist involving the vice president's public portrayal. The news outlet highlighted that GovTrack, a government transparency website, had previously ranked Harris as an extremely liberal senator back in 2019, positioning her to the left of even Bernie Sanders.

However, the page that documented this ranking was recently removed, stirring further debate about Harris' political positioning and the transparency of such evaluations amid her burgeoning presidential campaign.

The deletion of such pages does raise questions about the accurate portrayal and public perception of political figures in a digital age where historical materials can suddenly and capriciously be obscured.

The Evolution of the Border Czar Controversy

This ordeal reflects broader dynamics at play within U.S. politics where terminology, roles, and responsibilities are often intermingled in public discourse, leading to varied interpretations and misunderstandings about the actual duties of elected officials.

GovTrack, acknowledging its role and significance in tracking political histories and data, states, “We’re one of the oldest government transparency websites in the world,” thus underlining the importance of historical accountability and access to factual political information, but prompting further questions about its decision to delete its prior characterization of Harris.

The ongoing controversy over the title of "border czar" and the associated responsibilities highlights the complexities of political assignments and the vast expectations placed on public figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris.

As the 2024 elections approach, the clarity and accuracy of such roles will likely become even more significant in public and political dialogues.
