Jeff Bridges Reveals His Struggle With Large Tumor During TV Show Filming

 July 12, 2024

Jeff Bridges, the acclaimed actor, faced a formidable health ordeal mid-production.

According to Fox News, in a startling revelation, Jeff Bridges disclosed his battle with a substantial tumor and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma while filming the television series "The Old Man."

During the initial taping of "The Old Man" on FX, Bridges experienced peculiar symptoms. An unexpected workout discovery—what felt like a bone in his abdomen—pushed him to seek medical advice. His wife, Sue Bridges, advised immediate medical consultation, which eventually led to the diagnosis of his lymphoma during the pandemic.

After learning about his health condition, Jeff Bridges continued his work on set, performing demanding action scenes without discomfort from the tumor.

Amid Filming, a Health Crisis Emerges

It was during a COVID-19 filming hiatus in 2020 that Bridges received his cancer diagnosis. Indicators like itchy shins and night sweats, which he initially dismissed as trivial, were later recognized as symptoms of lymphoma.

In a surprising turn, following his final chemotherapy session, he contracted COVID-19, which severely worsened his condition and led to a prolonged hospital stay.

According to Jeff Bridges:

While on the ground, I was doing some exercises and felt what seemed like a bone in my stomach. I thought to myself, 'Hmm.' But it didn't hurt or anything. I asked [wife] Sue what she thought. She said: 'I don't know, but you've got to get it checked out.'

His subsequent COVID-19 infection following chemotherapy exacerbated his health issues, resulting in a critical five-week hospitalization. Bridges expressed the intensity of this period, noting how close he came to losing his life during that time.

Grateful Reflections and Surprising Discoveries

Despite life-threatening challenges, Bridges emphasized his journey as a significant learning experience in interviews with AARP magazine and at the 49th Chaplin Award Gala. He expressed amazement at how the mind forgets past tribulations, moving beyond the intensity of his experiences.

At the 2024 Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, Jeff Bridges shared insights into his physical and mental journey through his health crisis.

He discussed filming physically demanding scenes for "The Old Man" without any pain from the tumor in his stomach.

Jeff Bridges' work on "The Old Boys" amidst his health battle showcases his dedication and resilience. Reflecting on this chapter, he acknowledges the severity of his conditions and how the mind handles profound adversity.

In conclusion, Jeff Bridges' story, from discovering an anomaly during a workout to confronting cancer and COVID-19, is an extraordinary tale of resilience and recovery.
