Several Congressional Democrats Urge Biden to End 2024 Presidential Campaign

 July 6, 2024

Pressure is mounting within the Democratic Party as several members of Congress call for President Joe Biden to end his 2024 presidential candidacy.

According to Axios, amidst concerns about the President’s competitiveness against former President Donald Trump, Rep. Mike Quigley, along with three other Democrats, have openly suggested that Joe Biden reconsider his reelection bid.

Rep. Mike Quigley from Illinois, alongside Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, Rep. Raúl Grijalva from Arizona, and Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts have voiced their concerns. This group of Democrats believes that President Biden may not be the strongest candidate to continue in the upcoming election against Trump.

Initial Calls for Biden to Withdraw from the Race

Rep. Lloyd Doggett was the first among them, highlighting Biden’s previous commitment to being a transitional leader, which might now necessitate a step back to uphold that promise. Following Doggett, Rep. Raúl Grijalva emphasized the immediate need for responsibility and suggested that Biden step aside for the betterment of the party and the country.

Rep. Seth Moulton illustrated his argument by comparing Biden’s situation to that of George Washington, urging the president to allow new leadership to emerge. According to Moulton, this could be a dignified way to honor Biden’s substantial contributions and ensure his legacy.

Mike Quigley Emphasizes the Legacy and Risks

Rep. Mike Quigley spoke candidly about the importance of preserving Biden’s legacy but warned of potential catastrophic political consequences if he chooses to continue. According to Quigley, stepping down now could prevent future damage and cement Biden's positive historical imprint.

While these public calls pose a bold challenge, more Democratic lawmakers allegedly share the sentiment, albeit privately. They express increasing unease about the current political steering and its possible outcomes in the upcoming election.

Biden's Firm Stance on Continuing the Campaign

Despite these internal party voices, President Biden has firmly dismissed the idea of abandoning his campaign. In robust terms, Biden intends to press forward, asserting his plans to stay in the race despite the concerns circulated among some Democrats and recent polling data.</thinking-face

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Mark Warner are reportedly taking proactive roles by organizing meetings to discuss these matters further. These discussions are expected to provide a platform for more voices within the party to express their views and strategize the path forward.

“Recognizing that, unlike Trump, President Biden's first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw,” said Rep. Raúl Grijalva.

Amid all these political maneuvers, the party remains divided. Some members and supporters assert their loyalty and encourage Biden to continue his campaign, arguing he still represents their best chance against Trump.

An anonymous House Democrat revealed that while there is an escalating call for Biden to step down, there is also a desire to handle the situation delicately and give the President space to make his decision gracefully.

Upcoming Meetings Could Shape Biden's Decision

As Capitol Hill braces for these debates, the political landscape remains charged and uncertain. The next week is expected to see key figures within the Democratic Party converge to discuss these pressing issues more comprehensively.

Though challenges from within his party may strain his campaign, Biden’s resolve seems unyielded. His insistence on continuing suggests that this will be a vigorously debated issue in the weeks to come, possibly defining the narrative leading up to the Democratic nominating process.

While a significant faction within the Democratic ranks expresses concern over President Biden’s candidacy in the looming 2024 clash against Donald Trump, the President himself remains resolute. Meetings arranged by prominent Democrats on Capitol Hill next week will likely be pivotal in shaping the future course of Biden's political journey.
