If there is one thing that I have been begging Donald Trump to do since 2016, it is to pipe down and allow his opponents to hurt themselves. In 2016, it seemed as though every time Hillary or the Democrats did something stupid, Trump would say or do something that would hurt him. He did the same thing in 2020 but to a much greater degree. He could not get out of his own way.
Now, I know his base loves the immature posts, nicknames, and all the other nonsense, but that is not who Donald Trump needs to attract to win an election. Furthermore, when your opponent is hurting themselves, just stay out of their way. Trump clearly learned his lesson from the last two election cycles, as he has been laying low while Biden spins his disastrous debate. To that exact point, Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH) stated:
“When your opponent is blowing himself up, don’t interrupt … There’s no reason to insert yourself in that conversation. The discipline is smart on this topic, and he’s done a good job at that.
“Nobody in the Democratic Party cares about what Trump thinks whether Biden’s the candidate, so why talk. I’m glad to see he’s learned from 2020 because he wasn’t very disciplined then. I think it speaks to him learning from the past.”
Of course, with Trump being so silent, everyone wants to know what Trump really thinks of what happened with Joe Biden, but how much can he really attack him? This is an old man, and if you hit him too hard, people are going to look at Trump as a bully and start to have empathy for Joe Biden, which Trump cannot afford in this close of a race.
While Trump has been publicly disciplined and quiet, that has not been the case in private. Someone recently took a video of Trump on the golf course, where he absolutely blistered both Biden and Kamala Harris. Trump told his golf buddies:
“He just quit, you know — he’s quitting the race. I got him out — and that means we have Kamala.
“I think she’s going to be better. She’s so bad. She’s so pathetic. She’s so f–king bad.”

That video pretty much says it all, even though Trump is probably wrong about Joe Biden stepping down. There are only two ways that Joe Biden can leave this race, and that is by the 25th Amendment, which Democrats will never use because it would prove the GOP had been right about Biden’s mental state all along, or for Biden to step down.
They cannot force Biden out, but they can pressure him to step down. If Biden steps down, the smart move would be to resign from his presidency and allow Kamala Harris to run as the incumbent. I think that would be far better received than if he waits until the convention, declines the nomination, and then allows the electors to pick the candidate. That will more or less be the process regardless of when Biden steps down, but the perception would be far better if Harris was the incumbent.
Forget all the other narratives and the rumors of Michelle Obama running because none of that is going to happen. Biden is likely to stay in, but if he does not, rest assured, Harris would be the only real option to replace Biden for Dems to save face. In current polling, Trump is ahead of Harris by one or two points in most polls, so the race would still be a coinflip, but I don’t see the Dems being able to organize a supportive campaign for Harris that quickly to beat Trump.
