CIA Director Was Aware Of Letter Dismissing Biden Laptop Claims: Report

 June 26, 2024

A recent congressional investigation alleges high-level CIA engagement in discrediting the Hunter Biden laptop story ahead of the 2020 presidential elections.

According to Fox News, A joint report by several House committees claims that top CIA officials, including then-Director Gina Haspel, knew of a statement dismissing allegations related to Hunter Biden's laptop as Russian disinformation.

Details Uncovered in House Panel's Investigation

The House Judiciary Committee, the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence executed the investigation. They presented their findings in a joint report released in 2024, which suggests that certain CIA contractors actively collaborated with the Biden campaign to influence public opinion.

According to the report, the former CIA Chief Operating Officer Andrew Makridis confirmed he briefed either Haspel or Deputy Director Vaughn Frederick Bishop about the contentious statement before it was made public on October 19, 2020. This statement concluded that the contents of the laptop were likely Russian disinformation, released during the critical final weeks before the election.

Internal communications within the CIA revealed unease over the statement's overt political implications. An unnamed CIA official highlighted the agency's discomfort regarding the statement's political nature and its potential long-term detrimental effect on the agency's image.

Former Intelligence Officials and the Hatch Act

More surprising revelations included that Michael Morell and David Buckley, signatories to the October 2020 statement, were under contract with the CIA when they endorsed the dismissal of the laptop allegations. This raised significant legal and ethical questions, especially concerning the Hatch Act, which restricts political activities by federal employees.

During a House Judiciary Committee hearing in 2023, evidence surfaced that top intelligence officials were not only aware but perhaps facilitated the publication of the statement. These actions have since sparked a heated debate on the legality and appropriateness of intelligence officials engaging in politically charged communications.

Here is a statement directly from the report:

"This frustrates me. I don't think it is helpful to the Agency in the long run. Sigh," lamented one CIA official. "I also love that at least a few of the random signatures belong to individuals currently working here on contracts…" the official added, expressing concerns over the blurred lines between intelligence activities and political involvement.

Political Repercussions and Public Debate

The implications of such actions by former and active CIA officials are profound, influencing public trust in the intelligence community and the transparency of electoral processes.

Representative Jim Jordan pointed out, "We knew that the rushed statement from the 51 former intelligence officials was a political maneuver between the Biden campaign and the intelligence community."

Representative Mike Turner from the House Intelligence Committee emphasized the strategic coordination involved: "The House Intelligence Committee's work provided us with solid direct evidence that in the 2020 presidential election's final weeks, 51 former intelligence officials coordinated with the Biden campaign to falsely cast doubt on an explosive New York Post story and label Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop as 'Russian disinformation.'"

In a 2020 presidential debate, President Joe Biden cited the intelligence officials' statement to counter allegations about his son, demonstrating the statement's significant influence on public discourse.

This unfolding scenario underscores the delicate balance between national security, political impartiality, and the law. The report continues to stir discussion about the role of intelligence in political processes and the integrity of public communication by government officials.
