Report Suggests CIA Involvement in Discrediting Biden Laptop Story Before 2020 Election

 June 26, 2024

A recent congressional report has brought to light allegations involving high-ranking CIA officials and the 2020 presidential campaign.

According to Fox News, the report claimed that Trump's CIA chief knew about a letter dismissing Biden's laptop as propaganda before its publication, despite the Hatch Act forbidding most spy agency employees from engaging in partisan political activities.

House panels have unveiled findings that suggest collusion between CIA contractors and the Biden campaign, aimed at discrediting the Hunter Biden laptop controversy by marking it as Russian disinformation.

The controversy centers around a statement released on October 19, 2020, by 51 intelligence professionals. This statement categorized the unfolding Hunter Biden laptop story as potentially being a part of a Russian misinformation tactic. It directly responded to a New York Post article that first brought the laptop's contents to public attention.

Insight Into CIA's Internal Reactions

In this statement, high-ranking officials from the CIA, including then-Director Gina Haspel, purportedly knew about and possibly approved the statement's pre-publication. CIA Chief Operating Officer Andrew Makridis's testimony highlighted his correspondence with either Haspel or Deputy Director Vaughn Frederick Bishop about the statement.

Once released, this statement became a strategic point in the 2020 presidential debates, utilized by Joe Biden to counter accusations against his campaign. It suggested an external validation of the claims as a product of Russian interference, a point Biden emphasized during his debate on October 22, 2020.

The situation escalated significantly, finding its way back into headlines due to Hunter Biden’s 2024 firearm purchase trial, wherein his laptop was submitted as key evidence. Major media outlets originally pushed aside the claims as misinformation saw a reversal as the legitimacy of the emails was later verified.

Long-Term CIA Implications Raised by Officials

Following this controversy, several CIA officials expressed discontent with handling the situation. According to one unnamed official, "This frustrates me. I don’t think it is helpful to the Agency in the long run. Sigh," reflecting concern over the long-term impact of these actions on the agency's integrity.

The same official noted with irony the involvement of currently contracted CIA affiliates in signing the infamous letter, pointing out, "I also love that at least a few of the rumors signature belong to individuals currently working here on contracts…"

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan remarked on the nature of the intelligence interaction, saying, "We knew that the rushed statement from the 51 former intelligence officials was a political maneuver between the Biden campaign and the intelligence community."

Direct Evidence of Coordination Alleged

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner stressed the significance of the findings. He stated that the committee's investigation provided undeniable evidence of coordination between former intelligence officials and the Biden election campaign, occurring just weeks before voters went to the polls.

Throughout this period, the CIA maintained that all officers were obligated to submit any intelligence-related materials for review before publication, a standard aimed at maintaining operational secrecy and integrity.

As the details unfold, this report throws a spotlight on the complex interplay between national security agencies and political campaigns, emphasizing the ongoing debate over the boundary between national security interests and political maneuvering.
