Pizza Hut Indiana Closures Impact 15 Stores with 120 at Risk Amid Legal Dispute

 June 18, 2024

Pizza Hut is encountering significant challenges in Indiana, closing multiple locales as part of an ongoing legal dispute.

Breitbart News reported that Pizza Hut recently shut down 15 restaurants in Indiana, and there are concerns that 120 others might follow due to financial and legal conflicts with a major franchisee.

In a distressing development for the iconic pizza chain, the franchisee EYM Group, responsible for these locations, has allegedly failed to fulfill financial obligations.

This has spurred the eatery to take drastic measures. The faltering relationship between Pizza Yut and EYM Group stems from accusations against the franchisee of failing to make crucial payments by a deadline in June 2024.

EYM Group's Legal Struggles with Pizza Hut Escalate

This rift escalated into a legal battle when EYM Group, which manages Pizza Hut outlets in various states, sued the pizza giant in 2023.

They claimed that Pizza Hut had not sufficiently updated its menu or digital ordering process, thus impacting its competitive edge. Pizza Hut countered these allegations by suing EYM Group for financial mismanagement and breaching the franchise agreement.

The ongoing conflict saw the chains entering into a forbearance agreement earlier in 2024, yet the issues persist with the recent accusations of non-payment by EYM Group. This situation jeopardizes the future of more than 100 additional Pizza Hut locations in Indiana.

Pizza Hut Innovates Menu Amidst Operational Struggles

To reinvigorate its brand and appeal to changing consumer tastes, Pizza Hut has recently rolled out new menu items. These include Chicago tavern-style pizza available in four recipes, along with an array of eight new toppings and sauces.

Rachel Antalek, chief food innovation officer at Pizza Hut, elaborated on the new menu additions:

These menu additions represent a bold step forward as part of our culinary mission to bring our guests modern innovation that embraces what we know our customers love and looking for in a pizza. Tavern is not just a pizza; it is a culinary trend that reflects the excitement of today’s pizza scene.

In 2019, the company announced its strategy to close over 500 locations, signaling a shift towards a more delivery-centric business model. This decision reflects broader industry trends where traditional dine-in formats are being overshadowed by delivery and takeout services.

The dynamics of the pizza market are indeed shifting, with competitors like Little Caesars and Domino’s continually updating their offerings.

This competitive pressure was cited by ECHA in its complaints against Pizza Hut, indicating that the lack of menu innovation was harming the brand's market position.

The Future of Pizza Hut Amid Franchise Disputes

The resolution of the dispute with EYM Group will be crucial for Pizza Hut's future direction, particularly in maintaining its presence in a state where it has historically had a strong network of locations. Moreover, the outcome will be instrumental in shaping how the chain manages its franchise relationships and responds to market needs in the future.
