RFK Jr.'s VP Nominee Nicole Shanahan Defends Second Amendment Amid Biden's Gun Control Efforts

 June 13, 2024

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made headlines with a significant announcement at a campaign event in Oakland, California.

Nicole Shanahan, the vice presidential nominee for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., expressed her support for the Second Amendment amid the Biden administration's push for stricter gun control measures.

Kennedy and Shanahan spoke to a crowd of supporters about their vision for the country. Shanahan’s selection comes at a time when the national conversation about gun control is heating up, driven in part by President Joe Biden’s recent speeches advocating for stricter regulations.

According to the Washington Examiner, Shanahan articulated her stance on gun rights during a podcast interview with YouTuber Ian Carroll. She expressed her belief that preserving the Second Amendment is crucial while also addressing the root causes of gun violence.

Nicole Shanahan Defends Second Amendment Rights

Shanahan’s remarks highlighted her views on mental health and gun violence. “The Second Amendment is really important to preserve. And if the issue is gun shootings and mass shootings, which is a real issue, we need to get to the root of the issue,” she stated during the podcast.

At the same event, Shanahan criticized policies that she believes infringe on individual liberties:

Taking away liberties while obfuscating the issue around mental health is not going to lead us to a better tomorrow,” she added. “Maybe that makes me less liberal, but I actually think it makes me quite actually progressive in my thinking that we can’t strip people of their liberties — ever.

Biden-Harris Campaign Pushes for Stricter Gun Control

In contrast, President Biden’s administration has been actively promoting tighter gun control measures. Biden’s speech in Atlanta was part of a series of events focused on addressing the surge in gun violence across the nation.

Biden highlighted the successes of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a law he signed in 2022 aimed at expanding federal control over firearms. “Folks, this historic law is already saving lives, but there’s still so much more to do to maximize the benefits,” Biden said during his speech.

Divergent Views on Gun Control and Public Safety

Biden has called for the reinstatement of a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, reflecting a significant policy difference with the Kennedy-Shanahan ticket. This ongoing debate underscores the contrasting approaches to gun violence and public safety between the two campaigns.

Kennedy has previously linked the rise in gun violence to external factors such as the use of antidepressants (SSRIs) and violent video games. In a 2023 interview, he stated, “Before SSRIs and violent video games were introduced, there was no time in American history or human history that kids were going to shoot schools and shooting their classmates.”

Campaign Strategies and Public Reactions

The announcement of Shanahan as Kennedy’s running mate is seen as a strategic move to appeal to voters who prioritize gun rights and personal freedoms. This move also sets the stage for a broader debate on how to address the root causes of gun violence in America.

Shanahan’s views resonate with a segment of the electorate concerned about overreach in gun control policies. Her focus on mental health as a key factor in addressing gun violence offers a different perspective from the more regulatory approach championed by Biden.

Conclusion

As the presidential campaign progresses, the contrasting positions on gun control between the Kennedy-Shanahan and Biden-Harris campaigns are likely to be a focal point of public discourse. Kennedy’s choice of Shanahan, with her strong stance on the Second Amendment, aims to galvanize support from voters wary of increased gun regulations. Meanwhile, Biden’s push for stricter controls continues to highlight his administration’s commitment to tackling gun violence through legislative measures.
