Peggy Moore and her wife Hope Wood tragically died in a head-on collision on a California highway.
Moore, a former campaign worker for President Barack Obama, and Wood were killed when a vehicle veered into oncoming traffic near Fallbrook, San Diego County.
According to Conservative Brief, the crash occurred Friday night and involved a Chrysler that collided head-on with a Jeep carrying Moore, 60, and Wood, 48. Both drivers of the vehicles were killed in the incident, alongside Moore and Wood.
Moore made significant contributions to California's political landscape. She served as the deputy field director for Obama’s 2008 campaign and later as a senior adviser to former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.
In 2019, Moore and Wood co-founded the political consulting firm Hope Action For Change. Their work had a substantial impact on various political campaigns and initiatives.
The couple first met while working on Obama’s campaign, bonding over their shared passion for political activism and civic engagement.
On Saturday night, friends and colleagues gathered for a wake to remember Moore and Wood. Schaaf, expressing profound grief, stated, “It took you two hours to walk anywhere with Peggy — maybe more because she knew everybody.”
Schaaf added:
I’m in such deep grief for myself personally because she’s someone I loved and admired so much. And I’m in grief for democracy. [Moore] is someone who believed everyone should have a voice in government. She never gave up on the beautiful essence of democracy, even when it gave up on her. She infused this nuclear love into everything she did.
Kimberly Ellis, a close friend, described the couple as “almost twin flames that couldn’t bear to be apart in this life or the other.” She remarked on Moore’s exceptional organizing skills that helped win significant campaigns.
Rep. Barbara Lee expressed her sorrow over the tragic loss. "Her passion and fight for justice and equality is what brought her and Hope together," Lee stated. California Democratic Party Chairman Rusty Hicks also paid tribute, saying Moore was a “political talent” who was deeply committed to justice and organization.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs were factors in this tragic accident. The following individuals attended the wake and shared their heartfelt memories of Moore and Wood: Libby Schaaf, Kimberly Ellis, Rep. Barbara Lee, and Rusty Hicks.
