NBC News reported that GOP Vice Presidential hopefuls actively use their roles in Congress to enhance their qualifications and gain favor with Trump.
House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik publicly commended the former president after a recent Trump primary victory. Her praise came amidst her active participation in Congressional hearings that scrutinized university leaders, sparking notable administrative resignations over issues related to Israel and Gaza.
Other Republicans, including Senators J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio, Tim Scott, and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, are similarly aligning their actions and rhetoric with Trump’s style and policies. This strategic positioning is essential as the Congressional platform has repeatedly proven to be a solid stepping stone for those aiming for the national ticket.
The influence of Donald Trump over the Republican narrative is such that candidates aim directly for his approval, often sidelining traditional politicking. "If I had been vice president, I would have told the states — like Pennsylvania, Georgia, and so many others — that we needed to have multiple slates of electors and I think the U.S. Congress should have fought over it from there,” said J.D. Vance during an interview.
Though unsuccessful, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene's bold attempt to challenge the House Speaker received a tacit nod from Trump, who expressed his admiration for Greene on social media but remarked that the timing was off.
Tim Scott, appearing on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show, shared insights reflecting both strategic alignment with and personal admiration for Trump.
Senator Scott remarked on Trump's strategy regarding party leadership, noting the tactical placement of critical roles in trusted hands to ensure effective oversight of the party's operational framework.
"At the end of the day, you want the ball in the hands of the best player on the field. That player is Donald Trump,” Tim Scott stated, highlighting Trump’s pivotal role within the party.
