A recent survey and expert opinions indicate President Biden trailing behind Donald Trump among key voter groups, raising concerns over his reelection chances.
Democracy Corps, a renowned polling organization, surveyed 2,500 voters from November 5-11, 2023. Stan Greenberg, analyzing the results, described the situation as "grim" for President Biden.
More alarmingly, the Democratic voter base showed an unexpected shift. Trump's approval ratings were higher among Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, the LGBTQ+ community, Gen Z, millennials, unmarried, and college women, all traditionally Democratic strongholds.
This shift indicates a significant change in the political landscape. The Democratic strategists are rightly concerned as these groups have historically been the backbone of Democratic support.
In addition, Trump had an edge over Biden on several crucial issues. Voters perceive Trump and the Republicans as better for opposing extremism, getting beyond chaos, and protecting the Constitution.
On the other hand, Biden led by a narrow margin on the issues of "the president will not be an autocrat" and "protecting democracy." The issue of "making democracy more secure" resulted in a tie, further emphasizing the gravity of Biden's situation.
Despite recent positive economic indicators like falling gasoline prices and inflation rates, the public sentiment appears to be shifting away from Biden.
Jim Kessler, from Third Way, pointed out the issues of crime and immigration as significant factors contributing to Biden's dwindling support.
"If you are silent on these issues, it is like an admission of guilt to voters. They believe you do not care or are dismissive of their very real concerns. That means Biden must accept some griping from the left to get this story out to the vast middle."
His silence on these matters has led voters to believe he is either indifferent or dismissive of their concerns. This silence is perceived as a lack of action, causing a significant dent in his popularity.
Further complicating Biden's situation are perceptions surrounding his health and energy levels. Rogers Smith, a political scientist, suggests that Biden's "visible infirmities" are causing doubts among the electorate.
"This belief is reinforced by the reality that Biden does not inspire confidence in his vigor or energy in most of his public presentations. The problem is particularly acute among young voters but goes throughout the electorate, Democrats and Republicans alike. It means that voters don’t give much weight to Biden’s arguments on the issues."
In a candid assessment, a Harvard political scientist, Ryan Enos, opined that "Biden would likely lose if the election were held today."
