According to USA Today, the breach, attributed to the hacking group USDoD, involved data originally listed for sale on the dark web, causing widespread alarm and subsequent unauthorized releases.

"The stolen file includes 277.1 gigabytes of data, and includes names, address histories, relatives, and Social Security numbers dating back at least three decades," explained a representative from Schubert, Jonckheer & Kolbe, highlighting the breach's scope.
This hacking incident reportedly traces back to April when USDoD first advertised the stolen data for a staggering $3.5 million online. Subsequently, multiple versions of these records began circulating, escalating the risk of misuse.

The victimized company, Florida-based National Public Data, offers services ranging from personal background checks to sensitive data analytics. They have only partially acknowledged the issue, stating, "We are aware of certain third-party claims about consumer data and are investigating these issues."
